Buycheap refurbished Dell servers from GEKKO
Dell, headquartered in the USA, was founded in Texas in 1984 with a modest starting capital of just 1,000 US dollars. What once began as a company selling computer components has since developed into a comprehensive provider of technology products. Today, the product range extends from laptops and desktops to back-end solutions such as servers, network devices and the associated management software. Dell servers in particular are known for their reliability and performance and are used in numerous companies worldwide. In the GEKKO webshop you will find an extensive selection of various Dell models and components.
Find the right Dell server
This and other manufacturers offer their server systems in various designs, each with specific features. From a compact version for smaller applications to the powerful Dell storage server for enormous amounts of data - the right model can often be recognised by the name.
Interpreting the nomenclature correctly can make the selection process much easier. This knowledge enables a targeted selection of the optimum server solution. To make this clearer, let's take the Dell R940server as an example: the letter in front and the three numbers following it provide information about the series, generation and technical specifications of the server.
The preceding letter
The model names of Dell servers usually begin with a letter that characterises the design and the area of application:
- R: Rack - Stands for systems that are designed for the classic 19-inch rack. This design is the most widely used for Dell servers and is ideal for use in data centres.
- M: Modular - Refers to blade servers that are housed in a common enclosure. They share resources such as power supply, fan and I/O and are designed for housing models such as M1000e, MX7000 or VRTX.
- T: Tower - Describes standalone tower systems that can be operated without a rack. They are often used in smaller companies or practices where a dedicated server room is not necessary.
- C: This designation stands for node servers that are used in hyper-scale environments. They are designed for use in highly scalable and often highly virtualised environments.
The first digit - number of CPU sockets
- 1 - 3: 1-CPU systems
- 4 - 7: 2-CPU systems
- 8: 2- or 4-CPU systems
- 9: 4-CPU systems
The second digit generation
- 0: Generation 10
- 1: Generation 11
- 2: Generation 12
- 3: Generation 13
- 4: Generation 14
- 5: Generation 15
- ... continuing
The third digit - CPU manufacturer
- 0: Servers with Intel CPUs
- 5: Servers with AMD CPUs
The Dell PowerEdge R940 in our example is therefore a server with four physical CPU slots, the 14th generation, equipped with a Xeon CPU from Intel.
If you now have a requirement profile for your new Dell server , you may be able to estimate in advance which model is suitable for you. Let's assume the following simplified scenario:
Due to the high cost of data centre space, you are looking for a rack server that only takes up one height unit (1U) but can still accommodate two physical CPUs. Your budget is limited, so the server needs to be inexpensive, but must remain compatible with ESXi 7.0 U2. You also prefer Intel models.
With these requirements in mind, our experienced sales staff know that the Dell PowerEdge R630 is an excellent choice. Instead of dealing with complicated model designations, we are happy to assist you. Not only will we help you choose the right device, but we will also provide you with comprehensive advice free of charge - please contact us.
Dell rack server
The classic variant for rack mounting is by means of shelves or rack rails, often supplemented by optional cable management arms. With these products, Dell offers a comprehensive range of solutions that cover all company requirements and scenarios. The range extends from small, energy-saving 1U models to powerful 4U systems such as the PowerEdge R940, which supports up to 15.36 TB of memory and over 100 physical CPU cores. In addition, the manufacturer also offers OEM systems that are specially tailored and customised to the individual requirements of large companies. As with other manufacturers, models with Intel CPUs are particularly popular compared to AMD competitors.
Dell Tower Server
Tower or standalone servers are models that are designed in a housing with feet and, in contrast to comparable rack variants, are usually operated in an upright position. Externally, they often resemble a PC, but are based on the same reliable and powerful server hardware. Tower servers are therefore just as reliable and powerful. Particularly noteworthy are the low-noise models, which are equipped with large fans and are ideal for use in office environments, such as doctors' surgeries or law firms, where low noise levels are particularly important.
Dell Blade Server
Dell blade servers provide you with modular infrastructure solutions with extremely high scalability. The PowerEdge M1000e housing, the basis for the blade architecture, can accommodate up to 16 servers, each with two physical CPUs, in just 10 height units. This high power density is achieved by sharing the housing resources. Power supply units, fans, I/O slots and switch options are available to all servers in the blade, depending on management.
The CMC module (chassis management controller) monitors all blades and enables centralised and clear administration. Settings for energy management or the allocation of network resources can be set and prioritised centrally for all blades. The integrated iDRAC interface can also be managed centrally via the CMC module. The limited storage space of the Dell blade servers can be easily expanded to several petabytes with storage solutions from the Compellent, EqualLogic or PowerVault series.
Dell Mini Server
The mini variants offer compact but powerful solutions that have been specially developed for environments where space and energy efficiency are crucial. They are ideal for small businesses, branch offices or for use as edge servers and offer the full functionality of larger systems despite their small dimensions. Thanks to their space-saving design, mini servers can be flexibly mounted on a desk, in a small cabinet or even on the wall.
Despite their compact design, they offer reliable performance and are capable of handling various workloads. Thanks to integrated management functions such as the iDRAC interface, which is also used in larger Dell servers , the small version can be centrally managed and monitored. These systems are particularly energy efficient and produce minimal operating noise, making them perfect for use in quiet office or work environments. For additional storage capacity, they can easily be expanded with external storage solutions to meet the requirements of growing data volumes.
